Bihar Distributes Rs 112 Crore in Flood Relief to Over 1.6 Lakh Families

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has transferred Rs 112.14 crore in flood relief directly to the bank accounts of 1,60,201 families affected by recent flooding in the state. The funds were distributed on Monday through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), with each household receiving Rs 7,000 in assistance.

This latest distribution brings the total number of flood-affected families who have received aid to over 10.37 lakh, representing a cumulative relief package of Rs 726.17 crore. The government has been working to expedite support following widespread flooding that hit multiple districts across Bihar.

At a review meeting held on October 6 at Lok Sevak Awas in the presence of BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Choudhary assessed the flood damage and directed officials to prepare comprehensive reports. Water Resources Department Secretary Dr Chandrashekhar Singh informed the Chief Minister that the state experienced flooding in two distinct phases, with the Ganga, Son, Ghaghra, Kosi and Punpun rivers reaching unprecedented water levels during the first wave.

The second phase saw the Gandak River recording its highest levels at four locations due to heavy rainfall, causing embankment damage at six sites across West Champaran, Gopalganj and Saran districts. Choudhary attributed this year's severe flooding to exceptionally high water volumes and silt accumulation in riverbeds, noting that Bihar is the first state in India to formulate a dedicated silt policy to address this recurring challenge.
