IndiGo to nearly triple A321 XLR fleet to 10 aircraft by March 2027
India's largest carrier plans aggressive expansion with extended-range jets to tap growing demand for medium-haul international routes.
IndiGo expects to operate nine to ten Airbus A321 XLR aircraft by the end of March 2027, significantly expanding its medium-haul route capabilities, a senior airline executive announced Monday. The carrier currently operates four of the extended-range jets in its fleet of over 430 aircraft.
Chief Strategy Officer Aloke Singh revealed the expansion plan during a conference organized by GE Aerospace in Gurugram, highlighting that the aircraft will specifically target medium-haul international routes. He emphasized that India's aviation market is maturing, creating stronger demand for premium travel experiences.
"The India market is probably maturing, which means there is a bigger appetite for a more premiumised offering," Singh explained, noting this shift is reflected in IndiGo's strategy to increase business class seating on both domestic and short-haul international flights.
Singh pointed to tier 2 and tier 3 cities as key growth drivers for Indian aviation, describing the combination of market size and growth rate as offering "unprecedented upside." The executive noted that historically, launching non-stop, high-frequency services to unserved destinations has stimulated significant market expansion.
India's domestic passenger traffic reached 340 million in the fiscal year 2026 and is projected to surge to 1.1 billion by 2040, according to industry estimates. Medium-haul flights typically refer to routes with durations between three and eight hours.
